The visibility gap

AI adoption moves fast
Your inventory should keep up

What is Shadow AI?

Shadow AI is the use of AI applications or services within an organization without appropriate visibility, approval, or governance.

Employees can adopt AI assistants, coding tools, and autonomous agents faster than an organization can review them. An approved tools list alone does not show what people actually access or whether their business use cases have been registered.

Guardian AI’s Shadow AI Detection Platform is designed to bridge that gap: compare observed AI activity with your inventory and policies, then bring the differences into a clear review process.

One connected view

From observed activity to accountable AI adoption

01

Discover observed AI usage

Bring AI application activity into view. Explore which tools appear in connected telemetry, how usage changes, and where unapproved applications need review.

  • Approved and unapproved applications
  • Usage by application and department
  • Newly discovered AI and priority findings
02

Close the inventory gap

Connect what your organization observes with what it has registered. Keep applications, models, vendors, and business use cases in one governance context.

  • Application, model, and vendor inventory
  • Business use cases and approval status
  • Observed activity with no registered use case
03

Understand your coverage

See the health of the sources behind the dashboard. Interpret findings alongside synchronization status and missing data, rather than assuming complete visibility.

  • Source health and ingestion status
  • Last synchronization and reporting gaps
  • Partial-data indicators for informed review

Shadow AI detection FAQs

What is Shadow AI?

Shadow AI is the use of AI applications or services within an organization without appropriate visibility, approval, or governance. It can include employees using public AI assistants, coding tools, and autonomous agents outside established review processes.

How does Shadow AI detection work?

The platform is designed to use activity observed in connected security and network data sources, identify AI applications, and compare that activity with an organization’s AI inventory and approval policies. Visibility depends on the sources connected and the information those sources provide.

Can it distinguish approved and unapproved AI applications?

The platform observes AI applications, APIs, and MCP servers and compares them with approval classifications in the AI inventory. An application that is unapproved and a business use case that is unregistered are separate findings: approval for a tool does not automatically approve every use of it.

Does the platform collect prompts or conversation content?

Yes. The platform can collect prompts and conversation content, but this requires deeper integration with your environment. Please contact our team to discuss your requirements and integration options.

Does the platform block unauthorized AI usage?

The scope of our Shadow AI Detection Platform is discovery, monitoring, risk review, and inventory reconciliation. Guardian AI’s AI Governance service can help implement controls to block unapproved AI access and data use, along with governance measures tailored to your organization. Please contact our team to discuss your requirements.

How is this different from AI governance consulting?

The platform focuses on visibility into observed AI activity and gaps in the AI inventory. Guardian AI’s AI Governance service helps establish the policies, responsibilities, risk review processes, and controls that give those observations organizational context.

Can I see a demo and discuss deployment options?

Yes. Contact Guardian AI for a product walkthrough and a discussion of your data sources, monitoring scope, deployment requirements, and product availability. The website preview is illustrative and uses sample data; it is not a live monitoring service.
